Welcome to Cultural Diversity and Blindness website.

Here you will find information compiled by State Services for the Blind (SSB) regarding various cultural groups living in Minnesota. You will also find interviews with blind and visually-impaired individuals regarding their experiences of blindness within the context of culture. SSB encourages and promotes development of skills and knowledge needed to work across cultures, whether among our colleagues, volunteers, donors or customers.

SSB applied for and was awarded a 5-year, quality in-service training grant by the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. Some grant dollars, along with initial preparation by the State Rehabilitation Council – Blind (SRC-B) through the Minority Outreach Committee, were used to develop this site.

As you explore this site, you will discover seven modules – one for each of the 5 major cultural groups in Minnesota, one on working with spoken language interpreters and one to include additional information. Our intent is that you may find information you need by accessing a specific topic from the index; or, you may want to review the entire site for a good overview of cultural diversity and blindness in Minnesota.

We encourage your comments, questions and suggestions. Please contact Minnesota State Services for the Blind at 651-642-0500 or 1-800-652-9000
